Coverage: Upshift insurance covers bodily injury liability with a limit of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident and Property Damage liability limit of $50,000. Coverage applies as long as you abide by the Upshift Membership Agreement. If the vehicle incurs non-accident damage during your rental, you are responsible for damages up to a $1,000 deductible. You must report damages to Upshift as soon as it is safe to do so. 

Foreign drivers: We can accept a foreign driver's license if you are visiting the US. We'll ask you to sign an affidavit stating that you meet our requirements. If you have been a US resident for more than 10 days, the law requires you to get a California driver's license.

Driver's license: You must have been driving at least 2 consecutive years. You will need to provide us with your driver's license number so we can search your driving record. 

Driving record: All members must have a clear driving record. If you have any of the following on your record, we cannot accept you as a member at this time: major moving violations, vehicular manslaughter, excessive speeding, excessive disregard for red lights/stop signs, reckless driving, driving while suspended, or DUI.

Age: The minimum age is 21 years old to join. 


Fees suck. So let's work together to avoid them. We did our part by eliminating tons of these nasties, like late fees. You do your part by not smoking or losing the keys.

One time fee that covers the cost of running a background check on your driver’s record. **Waived for a limited time!**


$25 + cleaning cost

We keep our cars spic and span for everyone as part of our service. But if you return a car with stains or excessively dirty it may incur additional fees.



It’s an expensive, 2-day process with an ozone generator to get the smell of smoke out. And holding a cigarette out the window counts.

Pet Hair

$25 + cleaning cost

We love Fido, but he has to stay in a crate. Some of our members are allergic and we’ll have to clean up the hair if he is let out.

Tickets/Violation Processing

$25 + cost of ticket

It happens to the best of us. This covers our administration costs to process the ticket.

Roadside Assistance


We provide roadside assistance free of charge to cover any mechanical or breakdown issues. Fees may be assessed if member fault or negligence is involved (eg, emergency refueling, flat tire, lost key, or drained battery).

Extended Concierge Service Hours


Concierge service from 6am–8am or 8pm–10pm is available for $20. Please notify us before 7pm the night before for early morning service or before 7pm the same day for late night service. Returning on your own any time is always free!

Late Return


If you want to return early, please provide at least 1 hour notice before your new intended return time. If you want to extend your rental and return later than expected, please give us at least 1 hour notice before the end of your original booking end time.

Up to 5 hours extra time: $49 half day rate

Over 5 hours extra time: full day rate



Cancel <24 hours advance: 75% of trip cost forfeited

No show at start: 100% trip cost forfeited (if your concierge waits more than 10 minutes without being able to get ahold of you or if you cancel after your concierge has been dispatched, it will be regarded as a 'no show').

Routine cancelations may be subject to fees or revokation of membership.

<1 hour from start or end of trip: $10

After reservation has started or ended: $30

Additional time charges also apply if you are extending your trip. "Unused" time is not refundable.

Wrong Time or Location Dispatch


We treat our delivery concierges with respect and hope you will too. Changing the delivery location more than 1/4 mile once your concierge has been dispatched or making your concierge wait more than 10 minutes may be subject to a $30 fee.

Lost key

$75 + replacement cost

It’s hard to get anywhere without a key! This covers our time and expense of making a new one.

Lost car documents

$20 + replacement fees (if applicable)

Please don’t lose our insurance card, vehicle registration or other manuals in the car or we’ll have to stand in line at the DMV to replace them, which makes us sad. That, and we can't rent the car out until we get a new one.
